Golden Bay is a great place to drive. Unfortunately it is not such a great place for other road users. Being a rural area with dairying the main form of farming, milk tankers are frequently to be encountered. So too are large stock trucks, tractors, couriers and campervans. Although our roads are in very good condition, they are narrow and often have steep or non existsnt shoulders. This, combined with inappropriatly high speed limits, bad driving habits and a general disrespect for non motorised road users make for hazardous travels.

Although the road from Takaka to Collingwood has a 100kmph speed limit, this road was only designd for a maximum safe speed of 80kmph.

Since no-one seems to be interested in taking responsibility for this anomally, you will have to take the responsibility yourself.

If you squish a cyclist or other non motorised road user, it will be YOUR fault.

(it will take you four more minutes to get from Takaka to Collingwood at 80kmph - plan your life accordingly and enjoy the view!)

Remember - Cyclists have a legal right to use the whole carriagway and may need to do so at any time to avoid hazards.
